Richards began his automotive career with General Motors Corporation, in 1972, as a cooperative education student at the former Packard Electric Division in Warren, Ohio. While at Packard, Richards was a product engineer and a supervisor of manufacturing/quality control.

A native of Warren, Ohio Richards has earned a bachelor of electrical engineering degree from Kettering University and he was a GM Fellow at the University of Michigan where he earned an MBA degree.
